What are the 10 ways to earn loyalty points in Cosmo?

They fall into three groups: buying, things customers do on their account, and sharing your store. Here's each group, then where customers find them.

How do customers earn points when they shop?

Four of Cosmo's ways to earn are about buying. Customers earn on every order, as a fixed amount, a percentage or points per dollar spent. On top of that you can add a bonus for their first order, and extra points on the products or collections you want to sell more of.

Without buying

Can customers earn points without placing an order?

Yes. Cosmo can reward customers for creating an account, filling in their profile, adding their birthday and subscribing to your newsletter. Each one pays once, except the birthday, which pays every year. It gives people a reason to sign up and tell you more about themselves before their first order.

Spreading the word

Do customers earn points for referrals and social follows?

Yes. Every member gets a referral link, and when a friend places their first qualifying order, both of them are rewarded, each with an amount you set. Customers can also earn for following your store on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X or YouTube, once for each platform.

What customers see

Where do customers see the ways to earn?

On the Rewards tab of their account, Cosmo lists every way to earn you've switched on, each with what it pays, for example 5 points for every dollar spent. Anything you leave off simply doesn't appear, so customers only see what they can actually do.

Can I choose which ways to earn points are switched on?

Yes. Each of Cosmo's 10 ways to earn is its own rule, with its own on/off switch and its own amount. A new program starts with only order points switched on, and you add the others when you want them. Customers only ever see the ways you've switched on.

When do customers earn points, and what happens on a refund?

Order points are awarded when the order is fulfilled, calculated on the subtotal after discounts and excluding shipping and tax. If the order is cancelled or refunded, the points it earned are reversed. Points for actions such as signing up, a birthday or a referral are awarded when that action happens.

Do VIP tiers multiply every way to earn?

No, only the ones about buying. A VIP tier's multiplier applies to order points and to the product and collection bonuses, so your best customers earn faster when they shop. The first-order bonus, sign-up, profile, birthday, newsletter, referral and social rewards stay at the fixed amount you set.

How does the birthday reward work?

Customers add their date of birth, and Cosmo pays the birthday reward once a year, on the day itself, in your store's time zone. It's checked when the customer opens their rewards or saves their profile, so it lands when they visit on their birthday. The date is saved on the customer in Shopify, in a date field.

How are social follows checked?

They aren't checked with the platform. The customer follows your store from the link in their rewards and marks it as done, and Cosmo rewards each platform once per customer. Because a follow is taken on trust, you can set a cap on the total a customer can earn from follows, and customers see that cap in their rewards.

Can customers earn store credit instead of points?

Yes. If you run Cosmo's program as cashback, the same ways to earn pay Shopify store credit instead of points, and customers spend it at checkout like any other store credit. You pick one or the other for the whole program.

Do I need to edit my theme code?

No. Setup runs through a 4-step guided flow inside Shopify admin, and the customer account page is published from there. The loyalty program's product-page rewards widget is added as a block in the theme editor. No developer is required and no theme files are edited.
