Shopify custom customer fields, profiles and addresses with Cosmo

Cosmo adds your own custom customer fields to the Shopify account page, such as a birthday, company name, VAT number or an uploaded file, and saves every answer as a Shopify customer metafield. Customers keep those fields, their name, email and phone, and their address book up to date themselves.

How it works

How do custom customer fields work in Cosmo?

Add your fields in Cosmo's editor in Shopify admin. Below is what you can collect, what customers can change on their profile and address book, and where it connects to sign-up and loyalty.

Custom fields

What custom customer fields can you add in Shopify?

Cosmo adds your own fields to the customer's profile page as text, multi-line text, single-choice, multiple-choice, date or file upload fields, such as a birthday, company name, VAT number or product preferences. You name each field, set its choices and drag the fields into order, or reuse a customer metafield your store already has.

Field types

  • Text and multi-line text
  • Single-choice and multiple-choice options
  • Date fields, such as a birthday
  • File uploads: images, PDFs or Word documents
  • Your store's existing customer metafields
  • Drag-and-drop field order

Every field is a Shopify customer metafield

For customers

What can customers update on their own profile?

On the profile page of Cosmo's account, customers change their first name, last name, email and phone number, and fill in or update the custom fields you added. A file field lets them upload, replace or remove a file, and an email consent checkbox lets them subscribe to your emails or unsubscribe.

  • First name, last name, email and phone
  • Every custom field you add
  • Upload, replace or remove a file
  • Subscribe or unsubscribe from email marketing
  • A consent checkbox you can hide or reword

Changes save straight to the customer in Shopify

Address book

Can customers manage their own addresses in Shopify?

Yes. The addresses page in Cosmo's account lists every address a customer has saved, with their default address marked. Customers add a new address, edit or delete an old one and choose which one is their default, and each change is saved to the customer's address book in Shopify.

  • Add, edit and delete addresses
  • Set any saved address as the default
  • Country list with matching states or provinces
  • Optional company, apartment and phone lines
  • A confirmation before an address is deleted

Sign-up and loyalty

How do profile fields connect to sign-up and loyalty?

Any profile field can also appear on Cosmo's sign-up form, so customers answer it once when they register and change it later on their profile. In Loyalty & Rewards, customers can earn for completing their profile, counted on the fields you choose, and the birthday reward reads the date field you pick.

  • Ask any field at sign-up, required or optional
  • Edit the same answer later on the profile
  • A complete-profile reward on the fields you choose
  • A birthday reward from your date field

FAQ

Questions about Shopify custom customer fields

Can I add custom fields to Shopify customer profiles?

Yes. Cosmo adds your own fields to the profile page of the customer account, as text, multi-line text, single-choice, multiple-choice, date or file upload fields. Customers fill them in and update them themselves, and every answer is saved on the customer in Shopify as a customer metafield, next to Shopify's own name, email and phone fields.

Are custom customer fields stored as Shopify metafields?

Yes. Each field you add in Cosmo is a Shopify customer metafield definition, and each customer's answer is a metafield value on their customer record. The data stays in Shopify, so you can use it for customer segments and marketing from Shopify admin rather than exporting it from a separate system.

Can I use customer metafields my store already has?

Yes. Choose Use existing metafield in Cosmo and pick a customer metafield definition your store already has, such as one you created in Shopify admin. You can give it a different label on the account page without changing the definition, and removing it from Cosmo later leaves the definition and every customer's value in Shopify. Types the profile can't show are greyed out.

Can customers upload files to their Shopify profile?

Yes. Add a file upload field in Cosmo and customers can upload, replace or remove a file on their profile, such as an ID, a certificate or a photo. You choose whether the field takes images only, images and PDFs, or images and Word documents: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, PDF, DOC or DOCX, up to 10 MB a file. Files upload straight to Shopify.

Can I change a field after customers have filled it in?

You can rename it and edit its choices, but not change its type. Cosmo locks a field's type once it is created, so a date field stays a date and the answers customers have already saved keep their format. To collect the same information in a different way, add a new field with the type you want.

Do I need to edit my theme code?

No. Setup runs through a 4-step guided flow inside Shopify admin, and the customer account page is published from there. The loyalty program's product-page rewards widget is added as a block in the theme editor. No developer is required and no theme files are edited.
