How does redeeming loyalty points work on Shopify?

Here are the rewards you can offer, how you price them, and how a customer claims one, from their account or in checkout.

The rewards

What can customers redeem loyalty points for?

Cosmo has 5 rewards to offer: a discount code for a set amount, a code for a percentage off the whole order, a free shipping code, a Shopify gift card and Shopify store credit. Each has its own switch, so you only offer the ones that suit your store.

The 5 reward types

  • Discount code: a set amount off the order
  • Percentage off: 1% to 90%, with an optional minimum order
  • Free shipping: a code for any destination
  • Gift card: a Shopify gift card they can part-spend
  • Store credit: added to their Shopify balance, no code

What you set

How do you set what each reward costs?

Cosmo prices rewards in two ways. Discount codes, gift cards and store credit follow a conversion rate you choose: at 100 points to $1, for example, 500 points buys a $5 reward. Percentage off and free shipping each have one fixed points cost instead.

For customers

How do customers redeem their points?

Customers open Ways to redeem, on their Rewards tab or in the rewards launcher, and pick a reward. For a discount code, gift card or store credit they also choose how many points to spend. Cosmo issues the reward straight away and shows any code on screen, ready to copy.

What customers see

  • What their points are worth as they type
  • How many more points a locked reward needs
  • A Copy code button once they redeem
  • The date the reward expires
  • Past codes saved in their points history

Shopify Plus

Can customers redeem points during checkout?

Yes, on Shopify Plus. Cosmo adds a rewards block to checkout where customers choose how many points to use and see what that takes off. Pressing Apply turns those points into a discount code and adds it to the order, so they never have to leave checkout.

In the checkout block

  • Their balance and what this order will earn
  • A stepper for how many points to spend
  • The discount, shown before they apply it
  • How many more points they need, if they're short
  • The code to copy if a checkout won't accept it

You place the block in Shopify's checkout editor, and it redeems as a discount code

Do rewards expire after customers redeem loyalty points?

Yes, by default. A redeemed reward stays usable for 90 days after it's issued, and you can change that or let rewards never expire. One setting covers all 5 reward types, and customers see the expiry date when they redeem. A points balance is separate: it only expires if you switch on points expiry.

Can customers use a reward code with other discounts?

Only with some. Cosmo's discount and percentage-off codes are set to combine with shipping discounts, but not with other order or product discounts, so customers can't stack money off on money off. A free shipping code is the reverse: it combines with order and product discounts, but not with another shipping discount.

Are reward codes real Shopify discount codes?

Yes. Cosmo creates each reward in Shopify at the moment a customer redeems. Discount and free shipping codes appear in your Shopify Discounts list, starting with RWD- so you can tell them from your own campaigns. Gift cards are Shopify gift cards, and store credit goes onto the customer's Shopify store credit balance.

How do customers spend a store credit reward?

At checkout, with no code to enter. A store credit reward goes onto the customer's Shopify balance, and they can spend it at checkout on Shopify's new customer accounts, but not on legacy ones. If your store uses legacy accounts, offer a gift card instead, which works with both.

Can customers redeem points if I run the program on store credit?

No, redeeming is part of points mode. If you run Cosmo's program on store credit, every reward goes straight into the customer's Shopify store credit as they earn it, so there's nothing to redeem and no reward types to set up. You can only offer these 5 rewards in points mode.

Can I see how customers are redeeming their points?

Yes. Cosmo's loyalty analytics in Shopify admin show points issued and redeemed, your redemption rate and your outstanding balance. There's also a list of members who have enough points to redeem but never have, highest balance first, so you can see who has rewards waiting.

Do I need to edit my theme code?

No. Setup runs through a 4-step guided flow inside Shopify admin, and the customer account page is published from there. The loyalty program's product-page rewards widget is added as a block in the theme editor. No developer is required and no theme files are edited.
