Loyalty points or store credit on Shopify, your choice with Cosmo

Cosmo runs your Shopify loyalty program on either loyalty points or store credit. With points, customers save up and redeem them for a reward. With store credit, every reward is paid straight into their Shopify store credit as cashback and spent at checkout. You choose one for the whole program.

How it works

How do points and store credit work in a Shopify loyalty program?

You pick one reward currency in Cosmo's loyalty settings, and the rest of the program follows it. Here's how each one works, what they share and how long rewards last.

Points

How does a points loyalty program work?

In points mode, customers collect points from your ways to earn and spend them on a reward when they're ready: a discount code, a percentage-off code, free shipping, store credit or a Shopify gift card. You set what each reward costs, the minimum to redeem and what your points are called.

In points mode

  • Customers save up and pick a reward
  • Five reward types to choose from
  • Your own reward costs and redeem minimum
  • Your own name for points, like Stars or Coins
  • Redeem in checkout on Shopify Plus

Store credit

How does store credit work instead of points?

In store credit mode, every reward a customer earns is added straight to their Shopify store credit as money, like cashback. There are no points to collect and nothing to redeem: the balance shows on their account and they spend it at checkout. Every reward amount you set is money, not points.

In store credit mode

  • Paid into Shopify's native store credit
  • Spent at checkout, nothing to redeem
  • Reward amounts set in money
  • Your store currency, or another one you've enabled
  • The balance shown on the customer's account

In both modes

What stays the same whichever you choose?

Almost everything. Both modes of Cosmo's Loyalty & Rewards use the same 10 ways to earn, the same VIP tiers, the same rewards launcher and the same widgets on product, cart and thank-you pages. The difference is what a customer holds: a points balance they redeem, or store credit they spend.

Shared by points and store credit

  • The same 10 ways to earn
  • VIP tiers that multiply order rewards
  • One rewards launcher on every page
  • Product, cart and thank-you page widgets
  • Order rewards paid when the order is fulfilled

Expiry

How long do points and store credit last?

By default, a reward stays usable for 90 days after it's issued, and you can change that or let rewards never expire. In store credit mode, each credit gets its own expiry date. In points mode, the clock starts when points are redeemed, and a points balance never expires unless you choose to.

What you can set

  • How many days a reward stays usable
  • Or no expiry at all
  • An expiry date on every store credit reward
  • Optional points expiry after inactivity
  • An inactivity window from 30 days to 3 years

Points expiry is off until you switch it on

Should a Shopify loyalty program use points or store credit?

Choose points if you want customers saving toward a reward, with a choice of discounts, free shipping or gift cards and your own name for the points. Choose store credit if you want the simplest program: rewards arrive as money that customers spend at checkout, with nothing to redeem. Cosmo runs either, and switching later keeps customers' balances.

When store credit isn't the right fit

Customers can only spend store credit at checkout on Shopify's new customer accounts, not legacy ones. Store credit mode also has no free shipping or gift card rewards, and redeeming in checkout on Shopify Plus is a points feature. And if an order is refunded after its store credit was spent, that credit can't be taken back.

Can I switch from points to store credit later?

Yes. Switching changes only what new activity earns. Points customers already have are kept and stay redeemable, but stop growing, and nothing is converted into store credit. Switching back works the same way: store credit already issued stays on each customer's account. Once customers have rewards, Cosmo asks you to confirm before it switches.

Is store credit mode real Shopify store credit?

Yes. In store credit mode, Cosmo adds each reward to the customer's native Shopify store credit, the same balance Shopify uses everywhere else. It shows on their account and is spent at checkout like any other store credit, so there's no separate wallet for you to reconcile.

Can I rename loyalty points?

Yes. In points mode you choose what your points are called, up to 30 characters, for example Stars or Coins, and that's the name customers see in your rewards. Store credit mode has no name to set, because rewards there are money in your store's currency.

Which currency is loyalty store credit paid in?

Your store's own currency, unless you pick another. You can choose any currency that's enabled in your Shopify Markets settings, and customers earn their store credit in it. Order minimums on your ways to earn stay in your store currency, because that's the currency the order carries.

Can customers redeem points at checkout?

Yes, on Shopify Plus: customers can redeem points directly in checkout when the program runs on points. After purchase, the thank-you page shows what the order earned and any VIP tier the customer just reached.

Do I need to edit my theme code?

No. Setup runs through a 4-step guided flow inside Shopify admin, and the customer account page is published from there. The loyalty program's product-page rewards widget is added as a block in the theme editor. No developer is required and no theme files are edited.
